Thousands of keen locals, young and old, took a rare opportunity to go behind-the-scenes at the Nelson Police Station on Saturday. Children were posing for photographs in police hats and vests, took a trip through the cellblock, watched on as a pretend offender was tasered, met the police dog, ran through an obstacle course, and were toured around the city in the back of a police car. All of those activities and more were part of a nationwide police open day, where 12 stations opened their doors to the community.

Attempts to regain athletics track Nelson City Council is hoping it will be able to regain control of its athletic track at Saxton Field from the organisers of the Cricket World Cup. Cup organisers have an exclusivity period for the whole Saxton Oval venue, which includes the athletics track, from 21 days prior to the first match on February 16 and – bizarrely – another ten days after the final one on March 5. Area commander Steve Greally estimated somewhere between 5000 and 6000 people visited the Nelson station during the four hours, and put his support behind the event happening again. “It really surpassed my expectations,” he says. “It was just a great day and the sun was out, which was fantastic. I think people got to see the police in a different light, and saw different aspects of what we do and how we do it, which was really educational.” Steve says the event did a lot to build the trust in police and strengthen the already positive relationship they have with the community. “It’s about better engaging with the community that we have and I think people realize we are just part of the community itself, we’re not separate. We’re community members who have a job to do.”

Estimates by NZ Tax Refunds indicate that, if the entire population of Nelson claimed the overpaid tax that may be owing to them, over $16 million would be injected into the local economy.

However, this vision is only realistic from a financial, safety and design perspective if the existing State Highway is relocated to the southern link route,’’ he says. But councillor Eric Davy, the chair of the works and infrastructure committee, ruled that out, recommending that two of the options go out for public consultation next month. “Rocks Rd will be the state highway for the foreseeable future and will always be a busy road as it connects communities; the Arterial Traffic Study confirmed this,” he says. “The council needs to consider
how all modes can share the road. We think, along with the Transport Agency, that these concepts both work to address these issues. We look forward to hearing now from the community about which ideas they think work best to enhance and improve this important stretch of road.” The options range in price from $9 million to $14 million, with the third option ruled out by the council as it had an estimated cost of between $33 and $47 million. “We’re interested in hearing from the community on the two options that we feel are the most realistic.” Nick says the only “sensible way forward” is for Nelson to develop the boulevard vision for Rocks Rd, alongside the construction of a new state highway along the southern link route.

Nelson will lose a clear urban centre if the region’s roads aren’t sorted out says Nelson MP Nick Smith. Speaking about the cycling and walkway options for Rocks Rd delivered to Nelson City Council, Nick says the council has been sending “mixed signals” to the government. He says the council needs to drop all plans for the waterfront until a southern arterial highway, through Victory, is built. “What we’ve seen over the past decade, with the combination of difficult transport links and issues like parking, is that more and more of the retail spend is occurring in Richmond. We have a little bit of a parochial interest that we need to rise above, in that while that might suit Richmond, I don’t want to see Nelson develop longterm like Hastings and Napier, where you’ve lost a clear urban centre for the region.” Nick says the three options for a walking cycleway presented to the Nelson City Council should be scrapped and the council should instead focus its energy on lobbying central government to reopen talks

Suburban Club’s future ‘still bright’ The future of Nelson’s Suburban Club appears secure, with confirmation that it will reduce the club’s debt. This may require that the Tahunanui Drive premises are sold and the club leases back all or part of the building and continues to operate from the current site or from alternative leased premises. Either way, the club will no longer have a debt problem.
Board chairman Ross Strawbridge says the best possible outcome may well mean the club sells its current building and either leases all or part of it back, or purchases or leases another in a similar location. He says he’s confident that the club will be better off, with a stronger financial platform. Last week, Nelson Weekly reported that

members were told of the plan to sell the building amid a debt problem, stemming from the upgrade of its building in 2005 and the purchase of a car park in 2010. That debt, coupled with declining revenue, meant the club was in an “unsustainable” financial position. But Ross says he’s confident that selling the property would reduce the debt burden
on the club and of securing a lease on the present facility or another property somewhere between Stoke and Nelson. He says the new building may house all the same facilities it currently does, including pool, bars, restaurant, pokies and a TAB. But it would depend on the future needs of the club and the cost of providing the facilities.
Garin’s art fest a success Garin College students turned off their laptops and took a break from regular school work on Thursday and Friday, instead, taking part in their annual Mahi Toi event. Students are able to choose two, three, four of five activities to take part in during the two days. Those include performing arts, making cupcakes, designing wearable art out of recycled materials, flax weaving, constructing bottle rockets, and a whole lot of other fun workshops. Lindsey Furlong-Taylor, the teacher in charge of Mahi Toi, says it was a compulsory event for students, but something that everyone looked forward to each year. She says this year’s event was fantastic. “Everyone was on task and it was a good time, everyone had good fun and that’s what it’s all about.” Mahi Toi was a house event, with points given to the winners in each section. NCC u-turn means love locks can stay
After a huge amount of public reaction, Nelson City Council has made a u-turn and decided the love locks on the Collingwood St bridge can stay. The council announced the u-turn on Friday, just three days after news of their demise was made public in an article in the Nelson Weekly. Love locks first appeared on Nelson’s Collingwood St bridge two years ago and, as of last week, there was more than 30 of the padlocks attached to the fence surrounding the bridge’s walkways. But the council said they could cause corrosion so they cut them down. Reaction was huge online and a Facebook page was started to protest the move by council. The padlocks are locked into place by people to declare their love for each other and often have names or initials written on them. After the padlock is attached to a fence, bridge or other public
structure, the key is thrown away to symbolize unbreakable love. The practice is a century old but has gained in popularity in the last decade. The council says the change was made in light of the community response in favour of the locks since the story was printed. “So the council is happy to allow the practise to continue, but will monitor the situation and may have to remove locks in future if they become problematic or cause any extra maintenance on the bridge. We’ve fleshed out a few guidelines that we will be monitoring to help keep the love locks manageable.” Conditions to them staying include them not being attached to the bridge itself, only the netting surrounding the fence, they can’t become so numerous that they cause the netting to sag and they can’t stick out and interfere with passersby.

First World War medals donated to the Nelson RSA are being given back to the families of the local men and women who earned them. Nelson RSA is now on a search to find the descendants, who could be spread across the country, after the RSA executive voted to hand back the medals to help commemorate the centenary of the Gallipoli landings next year. Nelson RSA president Barry Pont says the medals were donated decades ago and he feels it’s the right time to give them back to the families. “We felt that, rather than sit in our archives, they should be distributed back to the immediate families of the veterans and there will be some exciting stories once the families do get in touch.” Families will have to prove they are the direct descendants because the medals are worth several hundred dollars each,

Gigatown will be great for business Forty local businesses have stepped in front of the camera to say why they think winning the “Gigatown” competition will be great for business and great for Nelson. The businesses were filmed by ten production companies to make a YouTube video as part of a mini competition to win points in the Gigatown competition. Nelson is in second place in the national competition run by Chorus NZ to find New Zealand’s most active town online. The prize up for grabs is for the winning gigatown to have access to cheap one gigabit internet, and a $200,000 development fund to create new business opportunities. The first stage of the competition ends in September, with the top five towns advancing to the final, which ends in November. The businesses filmed range from breweries to forestry companies and include Nelson’s largest businesses, Talley’s, Port Nelson, Sealord, NZ King Salmon, Nelson Airport and Wakatu Corp. Wine and Food festival raises $29,000 for charity The Brightwater Wine and Food Festival exceeded organiser’s expectations with an impressive $29,000 raised – which was donated to community groups last week. Not only does the festival celebrate the region’s produce with local wines, food, beer and music, but the money raised makes a substantial difference to the community; helping some of the Nelson and Tasman region’s hardest-working groups and volunteers do their jobs. This year saw a 3500-4000 strong crowd come out to celebrate summer and the new “back to basics” approach, which not only created a hugely successful day, but provided the Rotary Club of Richmond
with the platform needed to bring the festival back for good. This year’s funds were given out to the beneficiaries at a presentation last week, with $10,000 going to Nelson Marlborough Helicopter Rescue, $2500 to Wanderers Sports Club, $2500 to the Brightwater Rural Fire Force, $1000 to Brightwater School and $1000 to the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust. Several other organisations and groups received donations too, including St John, Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade, HYPE (helping young people at events), Nelson YMCA, Waimea Harriers and the Brightwater Hall.
Quiz night postponed as donations roll in
The “quiz world championships” are coming to town, but not this Friday as originally planned. The “World Championship Quiz Night” is to help raise money for the “Dad’s new lungs” campaign for local man Mike Corkill but, due to a huge amount of interest, Mike has decided to postpone it to “get it right”. He says he’s had thousands of dollars worth of prizes donated, including a PS3, local art, travel vouchers and landscaping products, and he needs more time to make a “special night”. The six children of Mike Corkill have been helping organise what they are calling the “World Championship Quiz Night” and joke that it’s been officially sanctioned by Ukrainian authorities, but they are still waiting on confirmation from every other country, including the Russians. The quiz will be held at the Waimea Old Boys clubrooms and Mike says he’ll let Weekly readers know the exact date when they have firmed up the details. Mike needs to raise $100,000 for a new set of lungs, if he doesn’t, he is certain to die. The fundraiser has been dubbed “Dad’s new lungs” by his children. The family have already raised more than $20,000 and are hoping for a big turn-out for the quiz. Nelson artist Marilyn Andrews says she donated hundreds of dollars worth of pieces because she wanted to help. “If I was in that situation I’d appreciate all the help I could get, so I had a little hunt up and donated four pieces of artwork, cards and magnets.” Running the quiz will be the comedy tag-team of Kevin Cross and Steve Page after their successful fundraiser for Walk with Us earlier this year. National Volunteer Week runs from June 15-21, with the efforts of local volunteers being recognised and celebrated. Volunteers fulfil an essential role in our community. In New Zealand 31 per cent of the adult population volunteer; within the Nelson Tasman region alone millions of hours are volunteered, and without this support many of the services and facilities we take for granted could not be provided. The theme for the 2014 NVW is “Nakuterourounau te rouroukaoraai te tangata.” Translated it means, With your contribution and my contribution the people will live. The whakataukī (Maori proverb) refers to co-operation and the combination of resources to get ahead. It suggests that if we pool our ideas, with equal respect for all parties, we will get a better outcome and everyone will benefit. The promotion / relegation game for the sixth position in Premier 1 was an absolute gem! Prices Pharmacy Black was fighting to retain their spot in the elite grade, while Nelson College for Girls were the challengers having won the first round in Premier 2. Nelson College had swept all before them, with an impressive record of averaging just over 60 goals for and conceding an average of about 35. Prices are a solid unit and have proved over the past five games that they are a worthy of a Premier spot, as they have matched it against the more experienced teams. Prices were 3-1 up a couple of minutes into the game, however it was the college team who settled more quickly to go into the first break with a 10-8 advantage. All four shooters looked a little wary of putting up the shot against tight marking from their defensive opposites. Prices will be ruing their below-par conversion rate in the first quarter – converting only two from ten. The second quarter looked as if there was a little bit of doubt creeping into the blue team’s play, they looked as if they may be “freezing up” and were not letting the ball go with the same
confidence. Prices brought on their seasoned goal shoot Leigh Leigh Wiremu and she quickly formed a good understanding with goal attack Emma Riddell. They each had the perfect conversion rate in the second spell to take the quarter 11-10, however they were still one in arrears at the major break. The third quarter was Nelson’s most productive as they outscored Prices 12-10. While the lead changed several times throughout the game, Prices only managed to level once in the final stanza before going down to the wire in the 41-42 loss. So, it is now exciting times for Nelson College as they step up to the elite grade and it will be a re-gathering for Prices Black as they look to attempt to win the next round of Premier 2, so that they can challenge for the Premier spot once again.

be playing at Neale Park in the morning from 9am and Kade says it’s a great chance for the senior players to get down to help out the youngsters of the club, before the JAB players can come back in the afternoon to support the seniors. Cup experience ‘special’ despite loss The New Zealand Under-20 rugby team have missed out on a place in the IRB Junior World Championship final, but halfback Mitchell Drummond says it has still been a special few weeks representing his country. The former Nelson College first XV captain started in three matches at the tournament, including Sunday night’s 32-25 semi-final loss to South Africa. Even though the Baby Blacks won’t be playing in the final, Mitchell was encouraged by the team’s performance, having been beaten in most facets of the game when New Zealand first played South Africa in pool play. On Sunday they found themselves in front for most of the game, only for the big South African team to claw their way back, scoring the killer blow in the 76th minute. “Every one of our guys gave it everything. We can all look ourselves in the mirror and know that. I thought we outplayed them but we just couldn’t finish it off at crucial times,” he says. “We learnt a lot from when we played them in pool play. We had a good
game plan and I thought we executed it quite well.” Mitchell, who was one of four Super Rugby players in the New Zealand team, relished his first opportunity to play for his country, and was happy with his own performances. “When I got my first jersey presented to me it was pretty emotional and pretty special. I’m just grateful to be starting and getting some good minutes.” New Zealand lost their captain Simon Hickey to an injury in their final pool game. He was replaced by Nelson fullback David Havili, who was an unused substitute in the semi-final and is a chance to make his New Zealand debut in the third-fourth playoff against Ireland. Mitchell says it was good to have his former school mate in the squad. “I was stoked when I heard he was coming up. It was awesome for him to be named in the team and I hope he gets a crack against Ireland on Friday.” The third-fourth playoff will be played at Eden Park before the final.

Last year, parts of the course became muddy after heavy rain the day before the race and that put “some of the recreational riders off ”, he says. “It is a mid-winter event and there is some rain forecast so we have to expect some mud. But the guys from Kaiteriteri have done a great job weather-proofing the track, so we’re hoping it will be in good condition.” Although the event is aimed primarily at recreational riders, the pace at the front end of the race is certain to be hot with some top class riders entered. The Kaiteriteri Mountainbike Park will be a popular place this Sunday when riders from around the Nelson and Tasman regions converge on Bethany Camp for the Nelson Mountainbike Club’s annual Six-Hour Mid-Winter Breakout. Last year, a record 547 riders completed 2365 laps around a five kilometre circuit of the park during the individual and team’s six-hour race. Although numbers are down slightly this year, the event remains the most popular cycling event in the region and organiser Wayne Pool says that’s because it is a fun event that targets a wide range of riders. “We changed the course last year because we wanted an easier climb and to make it technically easier so that we could accommodate all riders,” Wayne says. “We wanted to promote the race as an event for all abilities - it’s not just for the
